SpecSearcher has no accounts, no advertising, and no analytics scripts. It sets no cookies. This page says exactly what it does store.
Kept in your browser
Four things are saved in your browser's localStorage. They stay on your device and are never sent anywhere:
- theme — whether you chose light or dark.
- saved — searches you saved, and the names you gave them.
- shortlist — the frames on your shortlist.
- gridMode — which mobile results view you chose.
Clearing site data for specsearcher.com removes all four. Nothing else is stored, and no cookies are set. (The one exception never reaches a visitor: the operator's own coverage dashboard, behind a key at /admin, keeps that key in a cookie so it stays out of the address bar.)
Server logs
The web server writes an access log line for each request, containing your IP address, the URL requested, your browser's user-agent string, the referring page if your browser sent one, and the time. It is used to count traffic, see which pages get used, and spot abusive crawling.
Logs rotate at 50 MB with five files kept, so how far back they reach depends on traffic rather than a fixed number of days.
Outbound clicks
Following a link to a retailer goes through /go/…, which records the frame and the retailer clicked, the time, the page the click came from (the referring URL your browser sends, usually a search on this site), a short hash of your browser's user-agent string, whether that string identified a crawler or link-preview robot rather than a browser, and what it called itself at the level of "Chrome 128 on Android" or "Safari on iPhone" — a crawler's own name is kept in full. The hash is there to tell one machine clicking twenty times from twenty people clicking once; it is the same for everyone using that browser version and cannot be turned back into the string, let alone into you. That row holds no IP address — it exists to show which frames people click, not who clicked them.
Third parties that see your IP
Loading a page necessarily reveals your IP address to whoever serves it:
- Google Fonts — typefaces load from fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com.
- Retailers' image servers — frame photos are loaded from each retailer's own CDN rather than copied here, so those servers see your IP as the images load.
- The retailer you click through to — once you follow a link you are on their site, under their privacy policy, and they may set their own cookies. Some of our outbound links carry an affiliate tag, which tells the retailer the visit came from here. For retailers in the Awin affiliate network, the link passes briefly through awin1.com on its way, and Awin may set its own cookie to credit the sale; their privacy policy covers it. It never affects which frames are shown or how they are ranked.
What is not done
No advertising or analytics scripts, no tracking pixels, no third-party cookies, no fingerprinting, no profiles. Nothing collected is sold, rented, or shared for advertising.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you can ask what personal data is held about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, and complain to the Information Commissioner's Office. In practice the only personal data here is IP addresses in server logs, kept under legitimate interests for security and traffic measurement. An IP address alone is usually not enough to find your log lines — if you want to ask, get in touch and say roughly when you visited.
